History
Aero Oy – later Finnair - was established on 1st November, 1923 and this was also the birth year of the maintenance organization known today as Finnair Technical Services.
Our nearly a century long history entails extensive tradition in maintenance and engineering services. View a slideshow of our history for a detailed description.

20's
Finnair Technical Services roots go back to the founding of Aero Oy, the first real Finnish airline established in 1923. The first maintenance actions were carried on a ski-equipped, single-engined Junkers F13 (two seats for crew, four seats for passengers) in March 1924.

30's
A major overhaul on a F13 in progress at a workshop adjacent to Aero’s Kellosaari hangar November 1st, 1932. Helsinki got its land airport 1936 when Malmi airport was opened and at the same time opened a modern hangar for maintenance activities.

40's
Douglas DC-3 aircraft with 21 pax seats added to Aero’s fleet. Separate instrument, radio and electrical power shops established in the maintenance department. The combined staff of the above shops was 8 mechanics.
-
50's
As an example to illustrate the rapid growth of Aero’s in-house maintenance capabilities the number of avionics staff was already 51 at the beginning of 1951. In September Aero ordered 3 new twin-engined Convair CV-340 a/c from the San Diego, CA, manufacturer. The new Helsinki-Vantaa airport opened in July 1952 and base maintenance activities moved from Malmi airport to Vantaa 1955.
-
60's
The first Caravelle with 16 first-class and 57 tourist class seats joined Aero’s fleet in February 1960. The new aircraft required another big leap from the maintenance department’s capabilities. 1961 the 3 original Caravelle IA were modified to Caravelle Series III standard locally by the maintenance department.

70's
Finnair’s first wide-body aircraft, a DC-10-30, joins the fleet. To facilitate the maintenance needs of the new big aircraft a new hangar (#3) was built for Technical Services. Also plans for a new engine shop with an engine test cell big enough to cater the CF6-50 engine were started.
-
80's
The first MD-80 series aircraft entered Finnair fleet in spring 1983, totalling 24 aircraft over the following years. There was a very extensive avionics modification program designed and embodied by the Technical Services in order to get standardized cockpits to the whole fleet.

90's
In autumn 1995 our first and also the world’s first heavy maintenance MD-11 D-check was performed by Finnair Technical Services in our facilities.
-
2000
A340 was launched into Finnair's fleet summer 2006. It replaced MD-11 aircraft due to better fuel economy.

2010's
January 2010 Technical services separated from Finnair into two subsidiary companies of Finnair Group: Finnair Technical Services Ltd and Finnair Engine Services Ltd. Together these companies provide full maintenance service to our customers.
